The Homelessness Center
The Homelessness Center
Designing Transitional Housing for Urban Vulnerability
The Homelessness Centre is a visionary project aimed at addressing the acute housing shortage in Lagos State. Developed through extensive research by the African Contemporary Institute of Design (ACID)—the research arm of RUBAN Office—in partnership with the ACEJO Foundation, the centre is designed to accommodate up to 5,000 individuals. It provides a range of transitional spaces and essential resources to support residents on their journey toward permanent housing.
This initiative responds to the urgent need for dignified, temporary shelter in one of Africa’s most densely populated urban environments. The design is informed by ACID’s rigorous research into the socio-economic and spatial dynamics of homelessness in Lagos, ensuring that the centre is not only functional but also responsive to the lived realities of its users.
As a contributing team member, I was responsible for producing the research documentation and presentation materials that shaped the design proposal and communicated its impact to stakeholders. Read more about the project here: The Homelessness Centre.
