Olasumbo Olaniyi (OO) is a trained architect, researcher and spatial practitioner. She is pursuing a PhD in Architecture at the University of Plymouth, United Kingdom, working directly in the Justice and Imagination in Global Displacement (JIGD) Group, dissecting and reimagining the fabric of displaced communities. Parallel to this, Olasumbo contributes as an Associate Lecturer in the Department of Architecture. Prior to this, she served as a Research Assistant in the Arts/Health group.
With an intercontinental scholarly journey spanning Nigeria (BTech in Architecture, Federal University of Technology, Akure), South Africa (MTech in Architectural Technology, University of Johannesburg) and the Netherlands (PgDip in Urban Management, Erasmus University Rotterdam), Olasumbo is keenly interested in interstitial spaces made by people within African space, influencing urban development. Her performative practice delves into the social, cultural, ecological, and political forces shaping spatial dynamics in Africa and the world, by extension.
As a writer, her works have been featured by JustSpatialDesignZA, SomeOther Mag, and UrbanBetter. She was also featured in BBC Africa's documentary on air pollution in Lagos. As an invited speaker she has graced platforms by reputable multinationals such as The United Nations (UN) Foundation, International Climate Change Development Initiative (ICCDI), Global Plymouth, Pathfinder Initiative, and Hi-Impact 102.1 Fm.
Before commencing the PhD, she amassed research and architectural experience for almost a decade in various capacities across Nigeria (The RUBAN Office), Ghana (African Futures Insitute), and Italy (La' Biennale de Venezia), and actively volunteered as an Environmental Advocate with Urban Better and as a Project Manager with the Slum Art Foundation.
In essence, her work embodies a commitment to societal advancement through spatial research.
