Ikorodu Mosque
Ikorodu Mosque
Architecture as a Medium for Peacebuilding and Cultural Continuity
The Ikorodu Mosque is a research-driven architectural project rooted in conflict and violence resilience studies conducted by the African Contemporary Institute of Design (ACID), in collaboration with the Cambridge Initiative for African Urbanism (CIAU). Situated in Ìkòròdú—one of Lagos’s most dynamic and culturally rich districts—the project reimagines the Yorùbá communal space through a contemporary lens.
The mosque and its adjoining library serve as anchors for both spiritual and educational growth, offering free access to worship and learning for all members of the community. Religion is intentionally employed as a unifying language to foster peace and introduce African-centered education to local youth.
The project also emphasises sustainability and adaptive reuse: the site currently holds an abandoned structure, and its bricks will be repurposed as part of the new masjid complex. This approach not only preserves material heritage but also reinforces the project’s commitment to community-led development.
