The Maiduguri Masjid
The Maiduguri Masjid
Participatory Design and Resilience in Conflict-Affected Regions
The Maiduguri Masjid (meaning Maiduguri Mosque) is a participatory action-led initiative that places community engagement at the heart of architectural design and construction. Developed in collaboration with the Penumbra Foundation, the African Contemporary Institute of Design, and Ruban Office, the project explores resilience strategies for communities living in proximity to conflict zones.
Located in Northern Nigeria—a region deeply affected by violence and ethno-religious tensions—this project stands out for its inclusive approach. Local knowledge and lived experiences directly informed the design process and enabled community involvement throughout all phases of construction.
As a core team member, I was responsible for supervising on-site construction activities and conducting extensive data collection on urban systems, including transportation, waste and sanitation, religion, and healthcare. This data was synthesised into infographics and analytical charts that supported both the design rationale and reporting efforts.
This project exemplifies how architecture can serve as a tool for healing, resilience, and community empowerment in vulnerable regions. Read more about the project here: The Maiduguri Masjid.
